Rob McFarland, Co-FounderI fell in love with roller coasters at a young age. I loved watching them operate. I loved the screams of delight and fear. I also loved the clackity-clack of the chain lift and the smell of the grease. I still love those things about coasters but there is so much more! I always loved going to the fair every year in my home town and riding the rides, although I did not ride my first real coaster until I was around age 9. It was the Dahlonega Mine Train at Six Flags Over Georgia. I loved it but I was still scared to ride the “big” coasters. That time came when I was about 14. I decided to try my first big coaster. It was the Ninja at Six Flags. That day, I fell deeper in love with coasters and rode everything else in the park!Since that time, I have become what some would called "obsessed". I can’t wait to visit new parks and add coasters to my list. I read coaster news and updates online all the time. I always keep up with the latest installations and facts about various coasters. It is a fun hobby to have. I met Scott a few years back and we instantly became friends because of our coaster obsession. We traveled around every year to different parks but in 2009, decided that it would be fun to start a club and have more people to visit parks with and so we created Metro Atlanta Coaster Club. It is a blast and we have met so many other cool people that share our obsession!

Scott Hebert, Co-FounderMy obsession with roller coasters started only as a visual interest. When I was about ten, I began to appreciate the architectual aspects of roller coasters and began drawing them for fun. In theory, I loved them but, in reality, I was too afraid to ride them when my family visited the local theme parks. It wasn't until I was 13 that my father forced me, unwillingly, onto my first "major" thrill ride (at least it was at the time)...the Scorpion roller coaster at Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL. After it was over, I was immediately hooked. The following year 1994, the park received a major advance in roller coaster history, a giant multi-looping Bolliger and Mallibard creation, Kumba. I impatiently anticipated my first ride and was not disappointed. For nearly a decade, I had a love of theme parks and visited many across the East coast with friends. However, it wasn't until I met Rob that my true obsession began. He introduced me to the concept of "credits" and theme park websites.

Eric Wallerstein, Member Relations OfficerMy fascination with theme / amusement parks came at a early age. I remember going with my family to our local amusement park, Lagoon in Utah. It was usually a once a year thing with our church group, and we would picnic it every year. A bucket of KFC, and off we would go in the station wagon. My parents loved coasters, but I was always a little hesitant. Me being somewhat of a momma's boy, would ride with my mom as long as she held onto me. When I got older, I was unstoppable. I loved the aesthetics of it all. The smells, the sounds, and the lights. The park was always so clean and manicured. I also was drawn to anything with tracks, or a course. I loved the parallel lines. I was determined that when I grew up, I would work at the park and drive the steam locomotive trains that they had. 3 different course layouts throughout the park, 2 larger ones and a miniature steam engine that I was amazed by. My determination came thru and I did end up working at the park, and then into management and finally when I left, in the human resources role, a total of about 12 years. I did everything at the park, including ride/coaster operator, trains, water park, and even shoveled doo doo at the zoo! I even got to take home a baby siberian tiger for a couple of weeks to nurse into health. During our off seasons, while in management, we were often sent off to explore other parks and see the inside operations and workings of some major parks. It was always so much fun. I grew to love everything to do with parks and can appreciate all that goes into running, planning, and day to day operations. So when I met Rob and Scott, and they mentioned wanting to start a coaster club, I wanted in!! We had our first meeting almost 2 years ago. 4 people showed up, including Rob, Scott, and I, and 3 of us stayed. I wanted to meet other likeminded people. It has been fun! The trips we've taken are great, and only getting better as we grow. A great group of guys! Looking forward to many more years to come as well. So as a social advocate of our club, please feel free to contact me. If you have any questions, suggestions, or need a outlet for communicating to our group, I'm your guy!

Jeff Cohen, Events CoordinatorRoller coasters haven’t always made me happy. As a child, I was extremely afraid of them and it wasn’t until I was a young teenager that I went on my first non-kiddie coaster. That day changed my feelings about roller coasters forever. My 7th grade class was taking a trip to Kings Dominion near Richmond, Virginia. Before the trip, television ads began to air featuring the brand new Grizzly roller coaster. The ads played like a horror movie preview and I became nervous, frightened and extremely excited. When the trip finally arrived, I started out timid by riding the family friendly Scooby Doo and my coaster fears began to crumble. After conquering the novice Scooby Doo, my friends and I moved on to the bigger and more exciting coasters with intimidating names like King Kobra, Rebel Yell, Galaxie, and of course the brand new Grizzly. Over the years I’ve been to many parks and been on dozens of coasters. Oddly though, I never realized my passion for roller coasters until I met Rob and Scott in the summer of 2009. They had just started MACC and I began attending meetings and trips. My lack of knowledge of coasters quickly emerged and members of the club schooled me on coaster trivia. I still cannot match their knowledge but I enjoy learning and making fun of how much some of them know! I am proud to be the Event Coordinator for the club and look forward to meeting new members, attending events, and of course riding roller coasters. Certain coasters can still frighten me, but now that fear is a welcome feeling. The thrill and anticipation of riding a roller coaster for the first time is exhilarating. Even with the new innovative coasters, the Scooby Doo will always be special to me. I am grateful that the Scooby Doo (now Ghoster Coaster) still operates so that I can relive my first coaster ride.
The Club
Metro Atlanta Coaster Club was founded in July 2009 by Rob McFarland and Scott Hebert. We talked for a while about starting a coaster club since we both had a great love of roller coasters and we wanted to share that with others. For about three years before, we took many trips to parks across the country and had a great time. We continued to talk about how great it would be to make more friends that really enjoyed coasters and could join us on trips. We decided to reach out and see who else would be interested. This is where you come in. We try to take at least two major trips and several weekend trips each year. Being included in the club does not require you to take trips with us or even come to meetings; it's all about the love of roller coasters. You may only have a small interest right now but, as we've learned, it can turn into an obsession. Our club is open to all people regardless of sex, race, sexual orientation, or religion. We would prefer that our members be at least 21 years of age but this is not set in stone. We thank you for checking us out and hope to hear from you soon! Please click the email link on each page or use the "contact" page.
